Purpose:
We are committed to your privacy and confidentiality as a library user. We follow state law guidance for confidentiality of library records and believe privacy is a core tenet of intellectual freedom.
Policy:
Your Account Information
We collect the following information when you sign up for a library account: Your name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address, and Date of Birth.
Your account record includes items you currently have checked out, holds, and fee history. We do not keep a record of items you have returned. Once you return an item, it is deleted from your account unless there is a fee attached.
We permit only authorized Library staff with assigned confidential passwords to access account information for the purpose of performing library work.
Your account record remains in the system as long as you keep using it. We delete account records that have been inactive for more than three years (unless the account has an unpaid fee).
North Carolina State Law
We abide by state laws governing library privacy (NCGS §125-18, 125-19). We only provide information about you or your account when requested by you or required by law (subpoena or court order).
Third Party Vendors
We do provide access to numerous online resources from third party vendors (Libby, NCLIVE, Ancestry.com, Bibliocommons). When you use those resources, you are subject to their terms and privacy policies.
Public Computers & WiFi
The library does not collect personally identifiable information about public computer users or people who access our unsecured WiFi network.
Video Surveillance
The library does have security camera surveillance. The use of this footage is limited to investigating inappropriate or criminal behavior. The use of security cameras at the library is governed by the Town of Chapel Hill’s Security Camera Policy.
