After careful consideration, we’ve made the tough decision to end our 24/7 holds pickup locker service at University Place. The last day to pick up holds from the lockers will be Monday, December 1, 2025.
Why we made this decision
Due to the current construction at University Place, we must remove the lockers by 2026 and would not be able to reinstall them for at least nine months.
Several factors, many beyond our control, brought us to the decision to discontinue the service. These include: flood damage to the lockers from Tropical Storm Chantal, aging computer equipment, low usage compared to overall library checkouts, and the unplanned, high cost to move or replace the lockers at another location.
Since these lockers were installed during the early pandemic, we’ve expanded library hours and added more parking at the library, making offsite lockers a less crucial need.
Our goal is to use library funding where it can make the biggest impact, on the services and programs that our community needs most. Based on usage data, the lockers largely were not expanding access to those who otherwise couldn’t visit the library. Nevertheless, we know this change may be disappointing, and we truly appreciate your understanding.
We look forward to exploring new ways to expand access at the library. If you have ideas, feedback, or concerns, we’d love to hear from you.
What this means for you
The last day to pick up holds from the lockers is December 1.
After that date, all current and future holds will automatically be updated to pick up at the library. Your single-click holds preferences will automatically change to the main library.
The lockers will be removed by mid-December due to the construction timeline at University Place.
Can I still place holds at the lockers?
Yes, from now until December 1. After that, all holds will default to the library.
Are there plans to move the lockers somewhere else?
Not right now. Between the cost, the flood damage, and the age of the lockers, it doesn’t make sense to relocate them. But we’re always exploring new ways to make using the library easier and more accessible for everyone.
