Library account number

What’s my library account number?

Your library account number is your all-access identification number used to check out materials and access our extensive digital collection online. You no longer need a physical library card to borrow materials — though you can have one if you wish (just ask a staff member). Instead, you can access our collection using this number.

Your library account number could be one of three things:

  • It’s the barcode on your library card

If you have a physical library card, your library account number is the 14-digit  barcode number on the back, simple as that!

  • You registered for an account on our website

If you registered for a library account online, you received a six-digit “User ID.” This is your library account number. You do not need a physical library card, you can simply use this number to check out materials.

  • Your CHCCS student ID number

Through our IDEA project, every Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools student automatically has a library account. Just use your school ID number to access materials. If you didn’t already have a password, we create one. For students, it’s their birthday in the format MMxDD. For teachers and staff, it’s the last four digits of their ID, with an x in the middle (like 01×25). Learn more about the IDEA project here.

Accessing digital materials with your library account number

Log in with your library account number to use digital library services, such as NC Live and Libby.

  • If one of these websites asks you for your library card number, barcode, or library account, you should input your library account number.
  • When a website asks for your username, it is not asking for your library account number. This is likely a separate text username that you created.
  • All of these platforms require the same password, which either you created or which library staff created for you. Library staff can reset your password if needed.

If you are having trouble, don’t hesitate to ask staff for help.
